Surgical and traumatic scars

A scar from surgery or an injury may remain red, raised, depressed or different in texture. The earlier it is treated, the better it responds: laser can start as soon as the stitches are removed, even in complicated or non-healing wounds.

How I treat it

Each component of the scar

A scar has inflammation, relief, texture and colour, and each is treated with a different tool. That is why I usually combine techniques in the same session.

01

Inflammation and visible vessels

Redness and visible vessels in a recent scar respond very well to vascular laser, which also reduces inflammation. Treating them early helps the scar mature better.

02

Relief and texture

Fractional CO2 laser remodels the scar collagen and improves relief and texture. I adjust it to the thickness and area.

03

Raised or depressed scars

For hypertrophic scars and keloids I combine laser with drugs, injected into the scar or delivered with laser assistance (LADD). If the scar is depressed or tethered, I release it with subcision.

04

Colour

If the scar has become darker than the surrounding skin, the pigment is treated with picosecond laser, which breaks it up with very little downtime.

After treatment

Recovery and follow-up

After vascular laser there may be some redness or a small bruise for a few days. After fractional CO2, the area takes 5 to 14 days to recover. Several sessions, a few weeks apart, are usually needed.

Realistic expectations

What we agree before treatment

No scar disappears completely, but almost all can improve a great deal. Keloids tend to recur, so follow-up is part of the treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Surgical scars

When can a scar be treated?

As soon as the stitches are removed, even in complicated or non-healing wounds. Early treatment usually gives better results, although old scars also improve.

Which laser is used for a red scar?

Vascular laser, which targets the vessels that cause the red colour. If there is also relief or poor texture, I combine it with fractional CO2.

What about keloids?

I combine laser with drugs injected into the scar (intralesional) or delivered with laser assistance (laser-assisted drug delivery, LADD): corticosteroid, 5-fluorouracil, bleomycin, insulin or botulinum toxin, among others. I choose the drug according to the scar. Keloids tend to recur, so treatment includes follow-up.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on the type, age and size of the scar. Usually several, a few weeks apart. I will give you specifics in consultation.

How much does it cost?

Each laser session for scars costs from €250. The final price depends on scar size and the techniques used. The initial consultation (€150) is not deducted from the treatment price.
